Generally speaking, if you have a soft hand below 14, always double down against a dealer's 4, 5, and 6. That is the best strategy to follow in terms of doubling down.

A soft 19 and a soft 20 should never be hit, since they're strong totals by themselves and should be winning hands. Some experts suggest that a soft 19 be doubled down against a dealer's 6, but this is too skillful a play and might draw heat from casino personnel, so I don't suggest it be made.

In any event, doubling down in that situation gives you a very slight edge, so it's not worth getting barred from a casino to pick up a few more dollars.
