Perception is Everything in the
World of Comps
- Comps of all types are easier to get during midweek and off-season. Busy periods, especially conventions, are the worst times.
- A room comp is sometimes easier to get than a restaurant meal. That's because the room is charged at a fixed rate but the meal is open ended. It depends on the restaurant and your relationship with the casino. Can you be trusted in the gourmet bistro?
- Rooms at a discount and buffet meals are the Go for those when all else fails.
Swimming with the whales
A "whale" is casino slang for a high-roller. Gambling around whales can be fun, but don't expect $25 bets to generate comps at Caesars Palace and Bellagio, as they would at some other properties.
Competition also plays a big part in the availability of comps. A Davenport riverboat will be jammed on a Saturday in June. Not so for a Strip casino on a Tuesday in August. What if you prefer swimming with the whales? What if you prefer the riverboat? Play where you want. Don't pick a casino strictly for the comps. On the other hand, don't ignore their value. Figure the comps in when you calculate the overall price for fun. Look at the big picture and decide how much fun the comps contribute.
Comps and casino thinking
The casino understands probability, so don't feel bad about asking for comps when you're winning. You're doing your part; they're getting a shot at your bankroll.
It's not your fault that luck is temporarily against them. The casino will be happy to comp you because they want another chance at your money.
