IRS and Other Matters

Having a casino line of credit is one way to avoid carrying cash. Another way is to deposit money in the cage. The casino will gladly hold the funds, and even allow you to draw markers against it.

Here are some more tips for protecting yourself.

  • Watch your chips in the slot machine tray and on the rail at the craps table. A loud noise or a nearby disturbance should be a cue for you to look down and check your bankroll. Thieves use distractions to quickly grab unattended chips.
  • If someone falls or trips near you, don't immediately abandon your chips to rush over and help the person. It sounds cruel, but you should first gather and secure your belongings (including your money) before moving to help. If someone falls against you, immediately check your pockets and then your bankroll.
  • It's tough and mostly pointless to avoid showing your money at the tables. After all, it's a casino. But be aware of the people around you. Don't walk upstairs with forty black chips stuffing your pocket. Gash out and leave most of it in the cage.
  • Be wary of friendly strangers, especially if you're alone. It's nice to be popular. Having coffee at the bar or a sandwich in the restaurant with a new friend is fine, but don't give anyone your room number. Be particularly careful if your new friend suddenly appeared after you won money.
  • Don't drink too much. The liquor may be free, but it will cost you at the table when your judgment is impaired.
  • Avoid carrying a purse or handbag. If you must carry one, put it between your legs wherever you sit.
